Since opening in 1987 in Covington Twp., Mendicino’s Pizza Family Restaurant has come a long way while moving a very short distance.

What started as a simple pizza and sandwich takeout spot at one end of Bill’s ShopRite Plaza off Drinker Turnpike, has since changed location to across the parking lot and expanded into a full-service, elegant Italian restaurant.

The fresh-dough pizzas and from-scratch sauces are made the same as always, but the menu has expanded to include more classic and traditional dinners, such as the Parmigiana offerings or the tripe dish passed down through generations.

The main dining room accommodates 70, the private catering room seats 70 and the lounge has space for another 50 patrons. The lounge is only open to customers 21 years old and older and has seasonal drink specials and acoustic entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays.

Mendicino’s pizza comes in square Sicilian and round New York-style, topped with mozzarella cheese, but also offers the Antonio, which blends in American cheese. The Super Strombolis are a big hit, especially during the summer and around holidays with customers cutting the pockets of Italian specialty meats and cheeses into small serving sizes for platters.

Mendicino’s is open 7 days a week.
